How do I determine what size generator I need?
Determining what size generator you need is a complex decision involving many factors. It is important to select the right size generator so that you have dependable power when you need it, and that you avoid system failures or overloads that could lead to damaged equipment or dangerous situations. In general, a starting point in determining what size generator is needed is to add all of the connected loads in kW and multiply by 125%. Global Power Supply can help by providing certified electrical technicians with experience in sizing generators, who can professionally inspect and calculate your needs.

Is it possible to parallel two or more generators?
Paralleled GeneratorYes, with today’s integrated digital controls and paralleling switchgear, it is easier than ever to parallel two or more generators. Global Power Supply can help set up reliable, redundant, and flexible parallel systems that can be expanded over time as your business grows. These systems are both cost-effective, and with their multiple layers of backup power protection, have greater serviceability than a single, large unit. Another benefit of a parallel system is that smaller generators can be placed in different locations, allowing businesses to make the best use of the space they have. Global Power Supply recommends using an experienced electrical technician when setting up any power generation system.

What is the conversion between kW and kVA?
kVA x Power Factor = kW. Take a look at Global Power Supply’s Power Calculator page to assist in generating general power conversion estimations.

What does Power Factor (PF) mean?
Power factor is the shift in the voltage/current peaks due to reactive components of the load. Generally speaking, the higher the power factor, the more efficient a generator will operate, while lower power factors offer decreased efficiency.

How do I calculate the Power Factor (PF) for natural gas and diesel generators?
Power factor is a function of the load applied to the generator. By definition, power factor is the ratio of real to apparent power: PF=kW/kVA.

Can a generator be converted from 60 Hz to 50 Hz?
Many industrial generators can be converted from 60 Hz to 50 Hz, however, this needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. To convert a generator from 60 Hz to 50 Hz, the engine must allow operation at 1500 RPM. Some gensets require parts changes to accomplish this, others just need software updates, and some can’t be changed at all.

Can the voltage of a generator be changed?
Yes, the voltage of a generator can be changed if the alternator is designed to be reconnectable and is 12 lead.

What's the difference between emergency standby, prime, and continuous power?
Emergency standby power (ESP): Applicable for supplying power to varying electrical load for the duration of power interruption of a reliable utility source. Emergency Standby Power (ESP) is in accordance with ISO 8528. Fuel Stop power in accordance with ISO 3046, AS 2789, DIN 6271 and BS 5514.
Prime power (PRP): Applicable for supplying power to varying electrical load for unlimited hours. Prime Power (PRP) is in accordance with ISO 8528. Ten percent overload capability is available in accordance with ISO 3046, AS 2789, DIN 6271 and BS 5514.
Base load (continuous) power (COP): Applicable for supplying power continuously to a constant electrical load for unlimited hours. Continuous Power (COP) in accordance with ISO 8528, ISO 3046, AS 2789, DIN 6271 and BS 5514.

How do I calculate fuel consumption?Fuel Tank
If you know the size of your generator and the amount of load at which it will be running, fuel consumption can be calculated using Global Power Supply’s Fuel Consumption Calculator. Additionally, this can often times be found on manufacturer’s spec sheets.

What is a load bank test? How do I know if I need one?
A load bank test confirms that a generator is able to supply its rated power output, this is typically done upon installation and then annually. At Global Power Supply, we understand the importance of testing equipment, that’s why we perform load bank tests on all generators that we buy and sell.

What is an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)?
An ATS is a switching device that disconnects a load from the utility power source and connects it to the emergency power source, or generator, when the utility power source fails.

What are the differences between natural gas generators and diesel generators?

A big difference in the engines of natural gas and diesel generators is that natural gas engines are spark ignited, while diesel engines are compression ignited. That aside, there are some advantages to using each type of fuel.

Diesel generators can reduce overall fuel consumption and lower operating costs by as much as 50%. They are also easier and less expensive to maintain and offer a longer lifespan.

Natural gas generators tend to cost more initially, but in many cases can be configured to run on well gas, which can offer great savings over diesel fuel, and eliminate downtime during refueling.
