Reliable Backup Power for San Miguelito Water Plant
Global Power Supply (GPS) provided top-of-the-line backup diesel generators to the San Miguelito Water Plant, ensuring continuous water supply amidst power disruptions. The project focused on delivering reliable backup power solutions tailored to the plant’s specific requirements. GPS’s advanced power systems ensured that the water plant could maintain its operations without interruption, safeguarding the water supply for the community. This case study highlights GPS’s expertise in providing reliable and efficient power solutions for critical infrastructure.

MTU Generator for Water Company
Challenge
California Water Company needed to replace (2) backup generators but lead times from manufacturers were over 50 weeks.
Solution
Global Power Supply was able to cut the lead times and had (2) MTU 200 kW Diesel Generators delivered within 3 months.
San Miguelito Mutual Water Company (SMMWC), a privately-owned water and wastewater company based out of Avila Beach, CA, exists today as a result of a 1960’s vision. Bob Marre dreamed of a small-town resort along the central California coast, complete with a golf course, the San Luis Bay Inn for guests, and a community of 162 mobile homes supported by an extensive water and wastewater system. Mr. Marre set to work, but money halted the construction. Later in the 1980’s, it was purchased by the San Luis Bay Estates, who have successfully developed the area into a beautiful community, and currently the San Miguelito Mutual Water Company operates 700 water and wastewater connections in the area.
Today, Avila Beach is considered one of the premier oceanside retirement communities in the state of California. This lavish community relies on a system of pumps and lift stations to deliver water to and remove wastewater from their homes, filtering the water through an 80,000 MGD treatment plant.
Power is vital to San Miguelito Mutual Water Company’s operations. Therefore, every critical facility requires emergency backup power to ensure operations continue despite severe weather and unexpected emergencies. “In the utility world, power is everything,” explained Ryan Smith, Utility Supervisor of SMMWC. Over the winter months, San Miguelito Mutual Water Company experienced over 40 inches of rain, which resulted in downed powerlines due to flooding and massive tree fall in the community.
SMMWC had two 20-year-old on site, and they weren’t able to keep up with increased power outages. Within a two-month period, both of the old generators had massive failures on both the water and wastewater side, which left them without the ability to pump water to their customers or pump wastewater to the treatment plant.
Time was their biggest threat as they prepared for more predicted storms. With a temporary rental unit in place for the initial failed generator, SMMWC had to act fast to find permanent solution. After an aggressive search and receiving numerous quotes with lead times over 50 months, they were at a standstill—until they learned about Global Power Supply, a company specializing in backup power solutions and an authorized distributor and reseller of several high-quality manufacturers of new and used diesel generators, natural gas generators, UPS systems, and automatic transfer switches.
Among Global Power Supply’s large inventory of available backup power equipment, they had an MTU 200 kW DS200 diesel generator that was nearing completion at the factory. Global Power Supply was able to modify the voltage on the generator to match the required specification and confirm that it would be in compliance with strict California state regulations. It was about this time that the second generator at SMMWC failed, and this time they went straight to Global Power Supply for a solution.
In total, Global Power Supply was able to provide (2) top-of-the-line MTU 200 kW backup diesel generators, make a voltage change to each generator, and successfully deliver both units in less than 3 months to meet the strict time schedule needed by the SMMWC, so that they could continue providing dependable water and wastewater services for the community.
“The experience working with Global Power Supply has been a 10 out of 10. The process was very streamlined from the very first phone call. Talking with Mark Paisley (Global Power Sales Rep) and getting his ideas on which generator and what model, with his knowledge it made it very easy. Having Global Power Supply as our contact for all our generator needs has just taken our company to the next level,” explained Ryan Smith, SMMWC.
