Integration and Operation of a Microgrid

Global Power Supply provides a specialized Microgrid Application Study, which involves a comprehensive analysis of your existing power system to identify optimal strategies for integrating a microgrid. Our expert engineers create a model of your power system and simulate different scenarios involving the integration and operation of a microgrid. The simulations allow our engineers to understand the potential benefits, costs, and challenges of applying a microgrid in your specific context. Our goal is to provide you with insights and ultimately recommend the tools necessary to improve your power system’s resilience and efficiency.

Modeling and Power Flow Design

Our engineers study system modeling and simulation data created around critical data specific to your existing power systems. Based on the results of our simulations, our team of expert engineers will provide specific, actionable recommendations for integrating a microgrid into your power system, type of microgrid, components that should be included in the microgrid, strategies for managing energy within the microgrid, guidelines on how to integrate the microgrid with any existing power systems and infrastructure, and preferred location and orientation for the system.

In order to maintain regulatory compliance, we consider local regulations and environmental standards related to the installation and operation of microgrids when providing advice.

We offer assembly, installation, maintenance services, training and support – making sure that your microgrid is properly installed, and effectively managed moving forward.

GRID-CONNECTED AND ISLANDED OPERATION

A microgrid can run in two modes. In grid-connected mode, it operates alongside the utility grid, drawing power as needed and potentially exporting excess generation. In islanded mode, it disconnects from the utility grid entirely and powers your facility independently, which is the capability that matters most during a utility outage or a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

Global Power Supply’s microgrid feasibility study evaluatess both modes for your facility, so you know how your system will perform if the grid connection is lost and how quickly it can transition back once utility power is restored.

OWN YOUR POWER AT INDUSTRIAL SCALE

If your facility falls in the 500 kW to 5 MW range, on-site generation paired with a microgrid can give you more control over your power supply than the utility grid alone. Our white paper, Own Your Power: The Case for On-site Generation in the 500 kW to 5 MW Industrial Segment, covers why grid reliability is declining, how backup generators differ from prime power systems, and how combining generation, battery storage, and intelligent controls can improve reliability and reduce demand charges for data centers, manufacturing plants, and cold storage operations.

MICROGRID FEASIBILITY STUDY FAQ’S

A microgrid study shows you exactly how a microgrid would perform on your site before you invest in one. Here are the questions we hear most from engineers and operations teams evaluating microgrid solutions.

What is a microgrid feasibility study?

A microgrid feasibility study evaluates your existing and future power needs and simulates how a microgrid would integrate with it, including how the system performs in grid-connected mode and in islanded mode. Global Power Supply’s engineers use this model to recommend sizing of equipment, and potential ROI for your facility.

What does islanding mean for my facility?

Islanding is the ability of your microgrid to disconnect from the utility grid and power your facility on its own. This is the capability that keeps critical operations running during a utility outage or a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

What are the benefits of adding a microgrid to my power system?

A well-designed microgrid can improve energy efficiency, support peak shaving, integrate renewable generation, scale with your facility’s needs, and work alongside your existing generators and switchgear rather than replacing them.

Does a microgrid feasibility study include recommendations for equipment and controls?

Yes. Global Power Supply delivers specific recommendations for microgrid type, required components, energy management strategy, and how the system should integrate with your existing infrastructure, along with regulatory compliance considerations for your location.

“In recent years, our northern California facility has been increasingly affected by Public Safety Power Shutoff’s (PSPS), which sometimes results in power outages lasting several days. We were able to maintain operations with rental generators in the past, but because our business is so reliant on power, we were looking for a long-term solution that would provide greater energy security and resiliency. A microgrid solution turned out to be the perfect solution. It allows us to charge energy storage systems that will automatically kick in and provide supplemental power at peak periods, which saves us money on utility bills, and also will power our entire facility off-grid for up to a week.”
