FAQs About Power System Engineering Services

What types of power system engineering services does Global Power Supply offer?

Global Power Supply’s in-house engineering team designs custom backup and prime power systems, covering load calculations, equipment specification, enclosure and fuel tank design, and integration with transfer switches and monitoring systems. The team also performs supporting studies, including arc flash, short circuit, generator application, microgrid, and UPS system studies.

When does a facility need an arc flash study?

An arc flash study is generally recommended for new commercial or industrial facilities, before commissioning new electrical distribution equipment, and whenever significant changes are made to the electrical system. This can include major system upgrades, generator, transformer, or switchgear replacements, changes to electrical loads, or modifications to utility service. Arc flash studies should also be updated periodically as the electrical system evolves, and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) will typically require a completed study as part of the building permit closeout process.

What is a generator application study, and do I need one?

A generator application study evaluates your facility’s electrical loads, operating requirements, and site conditions to help determine the appropriate generator size and configuration for your application. A study may be recommended when installing a new generator, replacing or upgrading an existing system, adding significant electrical loads, or when facility requirements have changed. The goal is to ensure the generator is properly sized and designed to support your critical power requirements without unnecessary oversizing or performance issues.

How is a microgrid study different from a generator application study?

A microgrid study looks at how multiple power sources, such as generators, battery energy storage, and renewables, work together and switch between each other automatically, while a generator application study focuses on a generators performance against a facility’s infrastructure and load.
